The best free online video editors to try in 2026

How to pick a free online video editor, what to check before you export, and where Editr fits: a browser editor with captions, keyframes and effects.

What a free online video editor should do

A free online video editor runs in your browser. You open a page, drop in a clip, cut it, add text and export. Nothing to install, and it works on a laptop you do not own.

Most people need the same five things: cutting and trimming, text and captions, music and sound, simple effects, and an export that looks right on the platform they post to. Start with that list. A tool that does all five well is better than one with a hundred features you never open.

Check the export before you commit

Free plans differ most at export. Before you spend an hour on a project, export a short test clip. Look at the resolution, the frame rate, the file size, and whether the picture has a watermark.

Check the limits too. Some editors cap the length of a video, the number of projects you can keep, or how much storage you get. Read the plan page, not just the homepage. A free plan with clear limits is easier to plan around than one that changes halfway through a project.

Captions are now a basic need

Most short videos are watched with the sound off. Captions are no longer a nice extra. A good free editor makes captions for you, lets you fix the words and the timing, and lets you style them.

Look for three things: automatic captions, a way to edit each line, and an export as a standard subtitle file (SRT is the common one). If you publish in more than one language, check which languages the captions support before you pick a tool.

Where Editr fits

Editr is a free online video editor for your browser. It has a multi-track timeline with layers, keyframes, effects, colour looks and an audio mixer. Captions can be generated in the browser with Whisper, or with Deepgram if you add your own key. Stock GIFs, stickers, videos and photos come from GIPHY and Pexels.

The free plan includes 15 minutes of transcription a month. Paid plans give more transcription time and more storage. Check the pricing page for the current limits before you start a long project.

Editr is a good fit when you want captions and a real timeline in one place, and you want to keep the editing on your own computer rather than installing software. It is less suited to very long films or heavy colour work that needs a desktop editor.

How to choose in ten minutes

Open two or three editors with the same clip. Time how long it takes to cut, add a caption and export. Note what you had to pay for and where the export ended up.

Choose the one that let you finish the clip with the fewest surprises. Then learn that tool well. Moving between editors costs more time than most of the features save.
